IEEE-CS publications are the cornerstone of professional activities for our members and the technical communities we serve. We are seeking candidates who are familiar with our publications; who possess an excellent understanding of the field as it relates to academic, industry, and governmental areas; and who ideally have direct editorial experience on the periodical they wish to apply for as EIC. Candidates must also have successful experience attracting and developing a diverse team of talented and respected individuals to serve key editorial board roles. Demonstrated managerial skills are also required, as they are necessary to ensure rich content and issue development, along with timely processing of submissions through the editorial cycle.
Specific responsibilities include:
- embracing and encouraging broadened participation among the Editorial Board, authors, and reviewers;
- providing a clear, broad focus through promotion of personal vision and guidance where appropriate;
- identifying and appointing a broad pool of qualified and engaged Editorial Board members, with the concurrence of the IEEE-CS Publications Board or the cosponsored publication’s Steering Committee;
- directing Editorial Board members and other collaborators to work as a team in the development of special-issue proposals and manuscripts in specific areas;
- actively soliciting novel, high-quality manuscripts from potential authors and, with support from publication staff, helping these authors get their manuscripts published;
- upholding the quality of the publication, in particular, by maintaining knowledge of and ensuring adherence to IEEE Principles of Ethical Publishing and the policies described in IEEE’s IEEE Publication Services and Products Board (PSPB) Operations Manual (with an emphasis on the policies regarding Editor’s responsibilities, peer review, publishing ethics, and conduct);
- ensuring the selection of competent manuscript reviewers, with the help of Editorial Board members, and managing timely reviews of manuscripts; and
- promptly resolving conflicts or problems as necessary.
EIC applicants must
- be IEEE members in good standing;
- possess recognized expertise in the computer science and engineering community;
- have previous editorial experience and familiarity with IEEE publications; and
- bring the tangible support of their employer.
Please note: all applicants will be screened for incidents of prior misconduct including, but not limited to, violations of IEEE policies. Violations of IEEE publications policies will be strongly considered during candidate evaluation.
To apply, prospective candidates must upload the following documents to the EIC Search Application form, and must provide information requested in the form as part of their application package. All files must be in PDF format:
- A letter describing institutional/employer support for this editorship (including alleviation of a portion of teaching or project responsibilities, administrative and travel support, and so on), should this position be offered.
- A plan or vision statement detailing the applicant’s course of action and plans with respect to the publication. This plan should include:
- the applicant’s perspective of the publication, including challenges and opportunities;
- the tasks of the EIC to meet the challenges and to leverage the opportunities;
- the objective milestones associated with the intermediate and final accomplishment of these tasks;
- the projected schedules for the accomplishment of these milestones;
- the projected organization that will accomplish these tasks, including suggested individuals to recruit to the board or the type of expertise that would be most beneficial; and
- the funding requirements to accomplish these tasks, if any.
- A complete curriculum vitae, including publications and editorial experience. A single candidate who has applied for multiple EIC positions for the 2027-2028 cycle will be disqualified.
