IEEE Computer Society Call for HPC Award Nominations

Seeking Nominations Honoring Achievements in High-Performance Computing

LOS ALAMITOS, Calif., 24 April 2019 – The IEEE Computer Society seeks nominations for its high-performance computing (HPC) awards, which include the Seymour Cray Computer Engineering Award, Sidney Fernbach Memorial Award, and ACM/IEEE Computer Society Ken Kennedy Award.

Deadline for submitting nominations is 1 June 2019:

Seymour Cray Computer Engineering Award  – The Seymour Cray Award recognizes innovative contributions to high performance computing systems that best exemplify the creative spirit demonstrated by Seymour Cray. The award consists of a crystal memento and an honorarium of $10,000. This award requires three endorsements and is sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society.

David Shaw was the 2018 recipient, recognized for the design of special-purpose supercomputers for biomolecular simulations.

Sidney Fernbach Award  – The Sidney Fernbach Memorial Award, which consists of a certificate and a $2,000 honorarium, is presented annually to an individual for “an outstanding contribution in the application of high-performance computers using innovative approaches.” This award requires three endorsements and is sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society.

The 2018 recipient was Linda Petzold, cited for pioneering contributions to numerical methods and software for differential-algebraic systems and for discrete stochastic simulation.

ACM/IEEE CS Ken Kennedy Award  – A certificate and $5,000 honorarium are awarded jointly by ACM and the IEEE Computer Society for outstanding contributions to programmability or productivity in high-performance computing together with significant community service or mentoring contributions. This award requires two endorsements and is cosponsored by the IEEE Computer Society and ACM.

Sarita Adve received the award in 2018, and was recognized for research contributions and leadership in the development of memory consistency models for C++ and Java, for service to numerous computer science organizations, and for exceptional mentoring.
